Another week, and it would appear our in-coming review items are once again following a theme. Clear away all the audio products and welcome all the extreme sport gadgets, this week it’s all about the cameras. From dash cams designed to offer added security to our UK/European drivers, right through to action cameras designed to capture those once in a lifetime scenes, our review bench has literally been bursting at the seams with all the video capture gadgets. Up for review today is company stamped by yet another video capture veteran: HEDCAMz. HEDCAMz have sourced some of the best high quality HD (high definition) wearable camcorders available on the market today and are proud to be associated with the leading brands. Up for review today is the HEDCAM Ten80 Action Camera.
At just 39 grams, the HEDCAM Ten80 Bullet Cam is super lightweight yet packed with all the technology you need to capture great video! Coming in at only 80mm in length and 22mm in diameter it’s also pretty compact and discreet. An 8GB MicroSD card is included in the shipment package.
Breaking away from the usual action camera design we’ve seen in recent weeks/months, the HEDCAM Ten80 features a unique bullet style design and is both discreet as well as being very versatile. As mentioned in the product description, the HEDCAM Ten80 weighs only 39 grams and measures a jaw dropping 8cm in length x 2.2 cm in diameter. Design wise the HEDCAM Ten80, unlike other action cameras, comes in two colour flavours: a completely black coloured bodied cam, or if you are feeling adventurous, and just wanna show off your new toy the Ten80 is available with a shocking orange casing.
Resembling a torch, the HEDCAM Ten80’s chassis is completely covered in a rubberized coating. Like other action cameras this means this little cam is built to withstand some ruff and tumble and still come through the other side unscathed. The Ten80 itself doesn’t possess much on the way of physical buttons/ports/screens as it’s main priority is to be compact and highly discreet, therefore the only visible method of control is a single button that sits alongside the product name stamp. While the front lens looks fairly ordinary, the Ten80 features a laser alignment facility to help with shooting alignment. When powered on, the laser is illuminated for 10 seconds, giving you enough time to make any necessary alignment adjustments. With no visible screen/LED’s, how do you know if the Ten80 is switched on? Simply tap the power button and the Ten80 will emit a 10 second laser beam confirming the camera is on.
Concealed beneath a screwed end cap is the MicroSD slot and Micro USB port. Shipping as standard is an 8GB MicroSD card/adapter, which plays to one of our favourite product features, that being the fact the Ten80 is of the plug and play variety – god how we love products that are ready to go right from ripping the packaging open. For those wanting a camera that can be upgraded as and when needed, the HEDCAM Ten80 supports MicroSD/SDHC/SDXC compatible up to 32GB in size.
Specifications wise, the HEDCAM Ten80 is the little cam with some big surprises. Again taking the usual action camera features, then completely switching it up is the waterproof ability. Unlike other action cameras that require a separate housing/case to ensure complete waterproof-ability, the HEDCAM Ten80 is waterproof up to 10 meters without the need for any additional cases/housing. The Ten80 cam is a full HD camera and as such the available video resolutions are 1080p @ 30FPS or 720p @ 60FPS with the resulting output file format being mov (H.264 codec). The field if view options are 120º – 1080p and 135° – 720p. Battery wise, we are dealing with a 550mAh built in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, that offers a continual video shooting for over an hour in full 1080p HD. This can easily be extended with the optional battery bank giving continual shoot times for up to 6 hours.
The HEDCAM Ten80 is a sheep in wolves clothing, it may look small and un-interesting, but it boasts many big features that are an un-seen in a camera of this size. I was skeptical prior to testing that the lack of on-board screen and variety of buttons who inhibit overall use, however i was pleasantly surprised at just how fluent and easy general operation was. Rarely am i surprised by a product, but the Ten80 surpassed all expectations. The most basic of functions works and works well and is very much suited to this little cam. I did find myself questioning why all little action cameras were not designed this way, un-fussy and simplistic, in the world of action press and shoot is the way to go.
So how does one alter any of the camera settings i hear you shout? Connecting the camera to your laptop/PC using the supplied USB cable will allow you to access the settings.txt file. From there you are able to adjust the exposure, white balance, contrast, saturation, sharpness, quality, audio volume, light frequency, laser on/off, sensor rotate on/off, video format (PAL NTFC), video format (1080p, 720p). You are also able to add/edit the date/time stamp by creating a txt file and following the format instructions as detailed within the user manual.
If i had to be super critical it would be the continual shooting battery life, on a full charge we manged 49 mins of shooting time via 1080p, while close to the stated just over 1hr it does seem to fall a little short. However HEDCAMz do offer additional add-on accessories such as longer life batteries, so there’s certainly an option to improve on this should your wallet want to shell out a few more pounds. Accessories wise, the HEDCAM Ten80 (while one of the most compact cameras we’ve looked at to date) surprisingly offers the biggest and most comprehensive package as standard. Along with the camera itself and USB cable, arriving in the package are two cradles (a low profile and standard one of which is a quickclip), two mounts (curved and straight) both of which are quickclip, 3 velcro strips, three straps (goggle, head, and rubber), 2 end caps (waterproof and microphone) along with a variety of spare adhesive strips.
The HEDCAM Ten80 is one of those products that shouldn’t be judged on face value and really needs to be tested and put through it’s paces to ascertain just how powerful this little video gadget is. While there are a couple of little minor gripes, overall the Ten80 is designed with one single purpose i mind and for it’s target purpose it performs outstandingly. When rounding up my overall thoughts of the HEDCAM Ten80, the following sentence/saying springs to mind: ‘sometimes the most simple things in life are the one that surprise us the most’.
