With the British weather taking a turn for the worst, and winter well and truly upon us, there’s only one thing that can brighten the days and that is a review on another Boy’s Toy. Since it’s launch a few months ago, there’s nothing Daily Reviews love more is getting news of a new big-boy gadget. Introducing the Micro Monster Kickboard 2-in-1 scooter from Micro Scooters.
Product description at a glance:
This big and brawny scooter has been superbly engineered with a robust frame and our largest set of wheels so you can take on almost any terrain like a champion. The Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 Scooter is perfectly suited for heavier riders, and with a stylish D-Tribal design you’re sure to make a statement on the streets. Tear up the pavement or impress at the skate park with the incredible Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 Scooter. This domineering design features three 120mm FATTIES wheels for impeccable balance, impressive speed and incredible grip.
Not so long ago, Daily Reviews got the privilege to test drive the Micro Black scooter from Micro Scooters. The Micro Black was your all-in-one and very stylish manual mode of commuting transportation, offering both a quality build alongside their ‘every’ part is available scheme. With a Micro Scooter, almost every part on your scooter is easily replaced and can be purchased direct from Micro Scooters. Ensuring when you purchase, you purchase a product that can easily be remedied should the worst happen. Unfortunately, i am unable to find exact replacement parts via the Micro scooter website for the Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 Scooter we are reviewing. I have a sneaky suspicion that this is because the Kickboard 2 in 1 is a recent addition to their product lineup and as more sales go through, the parts listing via the Micro Scooters website will begin to grow in size (we hope).
In terms of design, the Monster kickboard 2 in 1 scooter follows through with a very unique scooter design, offering much more than your average scooter type mode of transportation. The Monster 2-in-1 kickboard is more ‘street’ than it is sophisticated and looks rather like it should be featured within a skate park magazine photo shoot. Emblazoned with a unique D-Tribal design on the front ‘T-bar’, rear wheel brackets, handlebar stem and kickboard, the Monster Kickboard scooter shouts ‘look at me, aren’t i cool?’. Breaking away from your traditional looking scooter the Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 scooter is sitting on 3 wheels, offering superior stability when compared with it’s two-wheeled counterparts. The wheels themselves offer a two front and one rear variation, with the wheels constructed from a hard-wearing polyurethane. Sporting Micro scooters famous 120mm sized FATTIES, the Monster Kickboard scooter offer un-paralleled speed, balance and grip.
The body of the Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 Scooter consists of an all aluminium frame, which not only brings incredible durability, but is very lightweight offering an overall weight of a mere 5 KGs. In terms of usage, the Monster Scooter is suitable for children aged 12yrs through to adults with a maximum weight of 98KGs (15stone, 7lbs).
Aside from the unique wheel layout, the Monster Kickboard 2-in-1 scooter also features two handlebar types – hence the name 2-in-1. Instead of using the traditional handlebar type whereby to turn the scooter you naturally turn the handlebars – the Monster scooter adapts a different approach. Turning the scooter relies on the three wheel layout, offering a balance board type turning system. Leaning in the direction you want to turn in conjunction with the joystick handlebar, delivers a ‘surf’ board type riding experience. Switching to the traditional ‘T’ bar handlebars is simple and provides a regular ‘scooter’ ride – with a difference!!!
The handlebars themselves, which are significantly different from the Micro Black we reviewed a while back are both of the static variety – meaning they are non-foldable in design. The Joystick handlebar consists only of a single over-sized rubber gripped sphere that is removed from the handlebar stem using one of the supplied allen keys. The ‘T’ bar handle bars that are included in the package are fitted with a durable rubber handle grips – the design of which mimicks the joystick handlebar. Adjustment wise, the Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 scooter can be extended to a maximum height of 3ft 4in (102cm) so you can find the perfect height for you. A fantastic benefit of an adjustable handlebar is that, if purchased for a younger rider, the scooter can grow with your teenager so you needn’t splash out on a new model when they get taller.
Just like the Micro Black scooter we looked at a few months back, the Monster Kickboard comes pre-fitted with a single rear braking system. In a change the rear brake is constructed from metal meaning a stronger and more precise braking performance. In-laid with a central rubber strip, brake heat is instantly eliminated.
Sitting Underneath the front wheel brackets/’T-bar’ are two bright red shock absorbers/springs – not just for show, these are your steering tension springs. The tension springs allow the rider to adjust the steering sensitivity for different rider weight/preferences – making for a more customized scooter ride.
When it comes to the ground, a lower deck provides better riding comfort – easing pressure on the lower back. Increasing the kick efficiency means overall, you have to do less to move faster and so those achy joints should be a thing of the past. The Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 deck (sporting a very eye catching tribal design) is finished in a non-slip grip tape and metal places in the front and rear. Built from a combination of both wood and fiber-glass, the Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 scooter absorbs the shock of uneven surfaces better than traditional singular material constructed decks.
In addition to duel handlebars and superior wheels, the Micro Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 Scooter also boasts a convenient folding mechanism. Simply collapse the scooter for easy transportation and storage. With the patented folding mechanism, to unfold your Monster, simply pull to release the locking mechanism at the base of the Joystick then raise. With illustrious Swiss design and cutting edge engineering, it’s no surprise that the Micro Monster Kickboard is an award winning scooter.
The Monster Kickboard 2 in 1 scooter breaks away from your traditional scooter design with multiple handlebar choice alongside a non-conventional scooter turning system. While the Monster Kickboard isn’t designed for the hardcore trickster who’s looking for a scooter that can handle all the jumps and stunts you throw at it, it’s design certainly suggests otherwise. When in the default Joystick mode, the Monster Kickboard scooter resembles a re-modeled skateboard, and oddly enough during usage this is exactly what it feels like. Initially the steering mechanism feels stiff and not at all natural, however after enough practice it fast becomes normal to lean in to your turns and offers a more convenient and fluent way of riding/steering your scooter. In terms of actual riding comfort, the three wheel layout makes the rider feel more stable, especially when on un-even ground such as dirt/graveled terrain. In conjunction with the larger FATTIE wheels, the deck construction allows for a large amount of shock absorption, eliminating the annoying ‘vibrate’ underfoot on our typical and rather rubbish British pavements/roads/pathways.
The Micro Monster Kickboard 2-in-1 scooter offers manual commuters or those looking for a bit of scooter fun, a different approach over the traditional scooter. Combining good looks, a oddly satisfying and eye-catching construction alongside some high quality components, Micro Scooters know what their riding community desire and have bought it to the table with their Monster Kickboard. Flexibility, customization and a ride that is as smooth as the paint job, the Monster Kickboard is both practical as it is stylish.
If i had to be super critical (and it’s hard when you have an awesome scooter sat in front of you) it would be the tires. Not just a Micro Monster issue, this is true of most scooters. While the smaller and fatter wheel dimensions offers better traction to the ground, i would like to see more grip added to them to make multi-weather usage a reality. Yes, it’s true that the FATTIE wheels did a better job than previous scooters in wet/icy weather conditions, and the three wheel setup did an excellent job overall of keeping the rider securely seated to the ground with little sliding. I would still like to see some upgrade wheel options added to the inventory. Some chunky highly gripped FATTIES would work a charm with the abysmal icy weather we’ve been having and would mean the Monster fans would no longer have to look outdoors and be forced to leave behind their Monster scooter!!!!!
