Netduma R1 Up Close:
The Netduma R1 router arrived in a fairly compact shipping box, and upon opening the unit itself is equally as compact and features a very small overall footprint. Finished in a matt white plastic housing, the Netduma R1 really isn’t much to look a in terms of design – it’s all about the guts and gore within that really impresses with this router. Measuring a mere 11cm x 14cmm x 3cm the Netduma R1 is small enough to be tucked away as well as featuring two mounting holes on it’s reverse should you want to wall mount it.
Specifications wise bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better and this little beast is packing some serious equipment under it’s bonnet. With a high powered 2.4 GHz 1000mW 802.11 b/g/n Wifi combined with a new generation Atheros 600Mhz CPU, the Netduma R1 also features 128MB of on-board ram. Helping to keep all the internal components running nice and cool are a plethora of ventilation grills dotted around the whole unit.
As stated while the unit itself isn’t much to look at, it does feature all the necessary ports. Sporting no less than five Ethernet ports, the Netduma R1 is giving routers everywhere a run for their money. One of the Ethernet ports is labeled PoE: Power over Ethernet or PoE describes any of several standardized or ad-hoc systems which pass electrical power along with data on Ethernet cabling. This allows a single cable to provide both data connection and electrical power to devices. In addition to the single power port, the Netduma R1 features a single USB port and an array of LED activity lights on both the front and reverse of the unit.
While there isn’t much to shout about when it comes to the design, the Netduma does a whole lot of shouting when it comes to it’s features….
Netduma R1 features in detail:
- Geo Filter:
The Geo-filter reduces the main cause of lag, distance, by guaranteeing a host close to your home. Say goodbye to a high ping and transform the way you play online forever:
By setting a distance limit from your home you will only connect to players or servers close to you. This significantly reduces the lag for you and most of the game’s other players. The affect on your game will be very noticeable, with improved response time and fairer game-play. The Geo-filter is patent-pending and completely unique to Netduma. It works with all major console games and is transforming the online experience of thousands upon thousands of Netduma users. The Geo-filter can be applied to a maximum of four devices simultaneously (all other Netduma features have no restriction).
Entirely unique and easy to use, Anti-flood eliminates congestion on your network like no other router in the world:
We have all been there. You have some free time to go online. Today is going to be a good day. But not for long. Perhaps your brother is streaming an HD video, your sister is uploading photos to Facebook or your house-mate is torrenting. Whoever it is, it’s your worst nightmare. Your Internet is drained and, to make matters worse, you’ve probably had a full blown shouting match.
With Netduma’s patent-pending Anti-flood, you can say goodbye to these household rows. We have solved local congestion once and for all. You can now download, upload, stream and game with no increase in ping. Even better, your family and friends will not be adversely impacted, meaning everyone in your house wins. For over a decade, good routers have prioritised data on your upload stream. This is usually referred to as Quality of Service (‘QoS’). The problem with QoS is people usually download far more than they upload. This is why your connection is usually asymmetric e.g. 20mb down, 2mb up.
So we tore up the manual and started again. After three years of hard work, we have written an algorithm like no other. Anti-flood works on both your upload and your download traffic and on any connection speed, no matter if you are rocking a 50mb+ connection or you are slumming it on a <5mb connection. Not only will Anti-flood minimise latency, it will also minimise lag spikes and packet loss.
Note for the techys: this algorithm is not an AQM derivative and unlike anything seen before. We have thrown absolutely everything we could at our Anti-flood and it truly does eliminate congestion, taking effect in a matter of seconds. Make sure you view the demo video above if you have not already done so. Keep in mind that Anti-flood cannot increase your overall download or upload speed – that power only lies in the hands of you and your ISP.
- Deny & Allow:
Deny & Allow gives you the power to permanently block a bad connection to another player or a server. This means that after a laggy game, you can tell your router to never connect to that host again. Paired up with the Geo-filter, this ensures you have the greatest tools to reduce your lag-rage:
Have you ever played a game that was particularly laggy? The most likely reason for the lag will be distance, which our Geo-filter addresses. The next most likely cause is the quality of the host or server you are playing on. With Deny & Allow, you can permanently prevent your game from ever connecting to that unwanted host again. It can also be used to white-list a friend or a great host, even if they are located outside of your Geo-filter, so you can guarantee a host or server near your home BUT still play with a friend, or a teammate, who lives further away.
To prevent Deny & Allow being abused to boot players, it will take effect two minutes after your game has finished. But once that time has elapsed, you can say goodbye to that stinky host, you will never have to play on it again. Keep in mind that Deny & Allow will not prevent you from ever being in the same game as the blocked player. You could still be in a future game with them but only on someone else’s host as you cannot connect directly to each other.
VPN-Hybrid fully protects your PC game or your stream connection from a DDoS attack and, unlike a typical VPN, it will not add any lag or reduce your bandwidth:
A VPN is used to mask your home’s IP address from a DDoS attacker by routing your Internet traffic through a server. So in the event of an attack your VPN server is hit instead of your home’s connection, meaning you can quickly change servers and carry on gaming / streaming.
Optimise your connection by easily controlling how your download and upload bandwidth uses your connection:
With Device Prioritisation, you decide how much of your upload bandwidth each device uses through a very simple interface. If you are a gamer you can simply allocate all of your bandwidth to your gaming devices such as your Xbox, Playstation or PC. If you are a streamer, you can also allocate your bandwidth to your streaming device, ensuring no one in your home can cause you to pixelate or buffer. Any un-needed bandwidth is automatically given to the other devices in your home, ensuring your family and friends are not adversely impacted.
You will see the effect immediately, and it does not just have to be used for gaming. For example, you might have a video conference call, a large YouTube upload or the need to share bandwidth fairly among house-mates. Make sure you read about our unique Anti-flood feature, which achieves a similar effect by eliminating congestion in your home on both your download and your upload. Paired together, these two features will mean those household arguments about who is hogging the bandwidth will become a distant memory.
- One-click VPN:
Prevent DDoS attackers from holding your game or stream hostage by rapidly and easily applying a VPN to any device, including your console, tablet or smartphone:
A major issue for gamers and streamers are DDoS attacks. These are used by malicious users to disable your connection.
A DDoS attacker is only able to target you if he knows your ‘IP address’. Your IP address is the Internet’s equivalent of your home’s postal address.
A Virtual Private Network (‘VPN’) has been used for many years to hide IP addresses. When a VPN is applied, an attacker can only target your VPN server’s IP address. This ensures that your home connection is unharmed. Before Netduma, enabling a VPN almost always required you to install software. This means that applying VPN on any device other than a PC or a laptop was only within the reach of those with considerable networking knowledge.
The Netduma router now gives a regular user the same level of power, allowing you to easily and rapidly apply VPN on any device. This freedom means you can choose the devices that want to be protected. For example, let’s say you have applied VPN to your console but you have left your PC outside of the VPN. If your console’s IP address is compromised then an attacker will only be able to disable your console. Your PC will be unharmed and you will be able to get your console quickly back online because switching VPN servers is so easy.
- Network Monitor:
A real-time visual of your network’s usage. This allows you to identify who, or what, is using your home’s Internet connection.
Have you ever wondered why your game is lagging, your voice call is choppy or your webpages are taking an age to open? With the Network Monitor, you can see the data usage of every device in your home, allowing you to understand the origin of congestion on your network.
Combining this Network Monitor with our unique Anti-flood feature will mean you have all of the tools to prevent congestion from slowing you down. You can also drill down into each device’s usage to understand which applications are consuming your bandwidth e.g. torrents, Skype, games etc. This can help you to spot if you have a virus or malware running on one of your devices.
- Ping Stats:
Real-time, live ping graphs while you game. Say goodbye to those ping bars and get an exact reading on the quality of your game’s connection:
Games tend not to offer much information on your in-game connection. This is especially true on console titles, where ping is usually shown as a bar. This makes it hard to know whether the lag we like to claim has caused our in-game death was real or imaginary. Netduma’s live ping stats will show you the quality of your game’s connection.
For most major PC games you will be able to see even more info, including an objective assessment of your game’s connection as well as your ping’s stability (‘jitter’) and your packet loss.
As well seeing these stats in real-time, you can also view them after the game. You can access your router on any device with a browser, such as a laptop, a tablet or a smartphone. This means you can quickly view the connection while you play.
Profiles allow you to easily switch between your favourite Netduma settings:
A Netduma R1 contains the most advanced router software in the world. With profiles, you can quickly and simply configure the router to contain your best settings.
The router has multiple pre-set profiles to get you the best connections possible from the moment you receive your router. Examples of pre-set profiles include:
Call of Duty Ultimate – the best settings to find you extremely good connections in Black Ops 3, Advanced Warfare &other CoD games
Call of Duty Private Matches – the ideal configuration for when you are playing a competitive match online (e.g. Gamebattles)
Destiny – optimal settings for great Destiny connections
Halo 5 – guaranteed local matchmaking servers
General Gaming – catch-all settings for when someone in your home is playing online
Non-gaming – ideal settings for when no-one in your household is gaming
There are many other profiles, including optimal profiles for FIFA, Mortal Kombat X & Smash Bros. With just two clicks of your mouse you can switch between your favourite profiles, ensuring the power of the Netduma router is unlocked in the simplest possible way.
Hyper-Traffic guarantees that your gaming traffic will always be at the front of your connection, ensuring it is NEVER caught in a queue in your home’s network. To achieve the best possible gaming connection, your gaming traffic needs to travel across the Internet as fast as possible.
If other devices in your home are using the Internet, there is a high risk that your gaming traffic will be caught up in queue, even temporarily. This is a particularly big problem if you live in a busy household where many devices are active. Hyper-Traffic ensures you will never need to worry about this again, as your gaming traffic is automatically pushed to the front of your connection.
Setup & Interface:
The Netduma R1 router is so simple to setup it’s ridiculous. There are no encyclopedia instruction manuals, no multiple page booklets, or even any technical knowledge required, the whole set up and connection process is summed up in a single piece of card that is included in the package. One side of the setup card displays a visual image for connection purposes while the reverse details step by step (in a total of only 7 steps) how to setup your Netduma R1 in detail. Summed up in only three sentences, you literally connect one end of your Ethernet cable to your existing router/modem (provided by your ISP) and connect the other end in to the PoE port on the Netduma R1. You then connect any existing wired devices to the Netduma (using the four remaining ports). You then disconnect/reconnect all yor devices and connect to the newly created ‘Netduma R1’ WiFi connection, navigating to a specific IP address (as proved in the quick start guide) will take you to the Netduma Control panel (similar to your current ISP’s router settings page – only more in depth).
The Netduma R1 control panel is very clean and laid out really well. It’s fluent switching from setting department to setting department is flawless and the whole package is really well thought out – giving even those with very little technical knowledge the power to navigate and change settings with ease. Upon first landing, you are greeted with a quick tour so you can really get a feel for the features and settings/controls available at your disposal. The control panel/interface itself sports a dark gamer style theme, with the main bulk of your selection controls running down the left side of the interface in an icon/text design layout. Everything about the control panel screams ‘complete control’ and i was amazed at just how in-depth and gamer focused the controls are – everything you need/demand for hassle free gaming tied up in one little white box.
The Netduma R1 is marketed as being built for gamer’s and the only router in the world that will fix your lag problems. After spending several weeks of testing i can confirm that not only does the Netduma R1 work – it absolutely excels – totally eliminating the game crippling lag that was present on COD/battlefield and the like. When it comes to multiplayer gaming, your internet connection/ISP is an integral part of the whole experience, therefore being able to choose exactly what sort of hosts you connect to and being able to ‘cherry pick’ the games you want and don’t want is is definitely the way forward, eliminating your opponents fairly and with pinpoint accuracy.
It’s only when tweaking the settings from within the Netduma R1 control panel and actually utilizing all the features, combined with some before and after testing that you realize just how much of a disadvantage you were at previously. The hit markers are realistic and the overall improved accuracy is actually quite astounding. The magic behind the enhanced game play comes from a selection of carefully set up features. Specifically for our game play, fiddling around within the Anti-flood section made a huge difference. Here at Daily Reviews we have up to 6+ laptops, 5+ mobile phones, several consoles all feeding from our internet connection at any one time. The draining sources from the multiple connections means that your ‘up through the roof ping’ can rest and sit within a even playing field – giving you a fighting chance (so to speak). In addition the Geo feature combined with the allow & deny is a massive must-have tool. Being able to single out the closest distance players/servers to you means that your in-game response time is vastly increased. The ability to permanently block a bad connection means that no longer will you have to endure that laggy, rage inducing, K/D destroying multiplayer game ever again.
The Netduma R1 is targeted towards a specific type of person, and that would be anyone who wants to optimize and stabilize their internet connection for gaming purposes. Throwing the book at laggy games and rubbish hosts, the Netduma R1 takes your gaming to a whole new level of perfect, giving gamer’s a real fighting chance against their on the battlefield opponent. From the simplified setup and intuitive and clean settings interface, right through to the plethora of features/controls available at your fingertips, the Netduma R1 is more than just an add-on, its a gamer’s necessity. If your gaming without a Neduma R1 you ain’t gaming at all!!!! Stabilize your connection and grab what’s rightfully yours: the chance to fight side by side. Gone are the disadvantaged, say hello to a new way of gaming….
