It’s about that time of the year again, the dreaded C word crops up and it’s all about how much money you can try and spend on the countless presents that no one really needs or want. However for the UK driver out there, there is one Christmas present gadget that is both useful and should be a necessity: a dash cam. Never before has it been so important to have as many eyes on the road as humanly possible when you are behind the wheel – especially at this time of the year when having your little recording friend could prove to be an invaluable. One company that knows the necessity and invaluable need for a dash cam is Silent Witness. With the name ringing a bell, Daily Reviews recently got to look at two of their dash cams, and up for review today is one of their newest additions to their ever-increasing and impressive camera lineup, the SW2200.
About Silent Witness Cameras:
You can never be too sure who is on the road, you could be involved in an accident at any time, whether it’s commuting to work or travelling to see family; you just never know!
It is often difficult to recall an incident, or there can different views on the incident, these situations can be laborious and extremely stressful, but with a Silent witness HD camera you can be at ease that you will be covered just in case an incident does ever occur.
This can speed up the process with insurance companies, while also protecting your no claims! Knowing that there is always a dependable, silent witness with you at all times can make a difference.
Out of the box i’m getting a severe case of deja vu, it’s like looking in the mirror at the Silent Witness SW010 dash cam we looked at recently. While a new camera to the Silent Witness lineup, the SW2200 is certainly following through with the exact same design/construction layout as the SW010. Sporting a cylindrical form and an all matt black casing, the SW2200 like it’s counterpart is designed to be compact as well as discreet, and as such the measurements are identical, with te SW2200 weighing in at 20 grams naked (without brackets installed) and measuring 4cms x 7.4cms x 4cms (or there about’s) (H x W x L).
Despite it’s compact size, the SW2200 features a 1.5″ high resolution LCD, sitting in the center of the unit, giving you the option to view while recording. The Silent Witness SW2200 uses a high end 1080p video processor alongside a high quality sensor not found in other leading brands of forward facing cameras. This particular adapted chipset is capable 1080p 30 frames per second. The output video files are standard video files, allowing you to play them back on full-screen on any computer system.
Storage wise, the SW2200 unlike the SW010, does not feature future upgrade possibilities by way of a MicroSD slot, instead the SW2200 offers a massive internal on-board memory size of 32GB, providing you with plenty of space for recordings/images. In terms of actual facts and figures 32GB of internal memory equates to 9 hours of raw video footage. Once all internal memory has been used the SW2200 switches to use the auto loop function. Unused footage will be over written when the cameras built in 32GB memory is full, allowing you to never miss a moment.
To prevent unauthorized usage of the camera, the SW2200 has a totally unique password feature, that will prevent unwanted access to the video footage. This is particularly useful for commercial/private vehicles and used by employers who may want to install a dash camera in a company car to keep an eye on employees for insurance, training purposes, or simply to monitor vehicle wear and tear. The unit is designed to be professionally installed, and therefore is hard wired to the vehicles ignition. The camera is completely tamper-proof eliminating any unwanted access from employees/drivers. In the event of an incident/accident occurring and to play back/search and backup files recorded, the password holder can simply remove the camera plug it into a PC and type in the password that they have set (using the Silent Witness Analysis Software provided). If a driver/employee attempted to delete the footage, they would not be able to access the files, and are simply shown a blank screen when the unit is plugged in to a PC.
Boasting to have the best low light sensor on the market, the SW2200 promises to produce sharp day time images as well as clear night time images with unrivaled low lighting abilities. The SW2200 itself, doesn’t shy away from features and alongside what’s already been discussed the SW2200 is an impressive bundle. Continuous recording mode is activated when you start the engine three minute clips are saved, and this will be on an auto loop recording system ensuring all crucial evidence is recorded. Incident recording mode works with a G- sensor function, when the G- sensor function detects an impact it will automatically save the clip before and after the event into a separate file. Like other Silent Witness cameras, the SW2200 uses a GPS module, this allows for faster GPS lock on times and much smoother positioning of the vehicle over Google Mapping. The GPS feature allows you to view the time, date, location and speed.
When we knew we were getting a new release from Silent Witness, there were no expectations as to whether things had been improved upon as our first two camera reviews did exactly what they proposed to do and them some. It’s a pretty difficult feat for a company to continually build upon previous products, however when you sport such a prestigious name like Silent Witness, it’s pretty simple. When your products work and work well there’s little to worry about. In the case of the SW2200, Silent Witness have bought to the table a clever camera that opens itself up to the masses, from a private individual who wants to be safe in the knowledge that he’s got an extra pair of eyes on the road, through to big companies that rely in factual evidence for the continued smooth running of their driving businesses, Silent Witness have tapped in to a market that is crying out for such a simple, compact unit that does it all.
Much like the SW010 we reviewed, the more compact the unit, the more basic the frontal controls will be – while it works as it should do, the smaller screen is somewhat fussy and the controls do take some getting used to. Nonetheless, i do have to give Silent Witness props when it comes to the SW2200, the bundled features and specifications far out-weigh any small-screen syndrome i may be have been having/experiencing when using the SW2200.
A bigger internal storage capacity alongside an easy-to-use software interface, makes backup, searching files, and playback simple and quick. The driver GPS information is clear and precise, and with a reduced/discounted membership at Police Witness, you can be safe in the knowledge that should anything happen on the road you are fully protected.
Silent Witness are dash camera veterans and they know what works, what’s needed, and what’s demanded, and bring it to the table with each new release – perfecting and tweaking each camera to bundle in more features and specifications than the last. The SW2200, brings to the table a whole host of new features that are not only a welcomed addition to the normal run-of-the-mill driver looking for added on-the-road protection, but also the large company who need an extra pair of eyes on the road. The SW2200 is your go-to comprehensive driving companion, there when you need it and with more features than you can shake a stick at.
