Turtle Beach 420X Design:
The Stealth 420X follows the staple Turtle Beach design with a toughened plastic all black housing and a few hints of color here and there. Succeeding the traditional XBOX ONE color theme, the 420X feature flashes of color in the form of the usual race strip encapsulating each ear cup along with the turtle beach logo that resides on the inner and outer ear-cup, both of which are finished in the same shade of XBOX green. Each ear-cup possesses just over an inch of memory foam comfort padding goodness, and instead of the normal mesh covering, the 420X have adapted a synthetic leather covering. For those worried about over-heating and the dreaded gamer’s ear sweat, the leatherette ear pad umbrella features a series of tiny puncture holes to help with airflow and cooling and according to the user guide, the perforated leather provides improved bass response.
Much like other models in the Turtle Beach headset lineup, the 420X, are extremely lightweight – again this down to the construction materials used. The headband provides yet further comfort padding and an extender measurement of a further 1.5″ either side. However, like previous models, the buyer should be aware that while there is some wiggle room in the form of the side adjusters, applying more than usual pressure to force the headband apart may not be the best idea. So i’m afraid big headed gamer’s need not apply (this includes those that think trash talking online is funny :p).
The Stealth 420X are closed back circumaural headphones and so are designed with noise isolation in mind – allowing the gamer to fully immerse themselves in the on-screen action. Technical specifications wise, the Stealth 420x feature 50mm speakers with neodyminium magnets and have an frequency response of 20Hz – 20kHz.
The Stealth 420X are of the wireless headset variety and offer a wireless range of up to 30ft, therefore, the 420X includes a USB wireless transmitter. In true Turtle Beach style the USB transmitter uses an RF wireless connection with intelligent channel hopping. The mic boom (like other Turtle Beach Headsets) is removable for convenience.
In addition to your console gaming options, the 420X is mobile compatible, using the supplied mobile optical cable with in-line mic. When using the Mobile Cable with In-Line Mic the Boom Mic will automatically not be used for the Mobile
Connection and the In-Line Mic will not be used for the Xbox One Connection. This means that by using the Mute Button on the headset you can take a private phone call while gaming without any hassle.
All the other necessary ports and connectors are positioned on the ear-cup rims for ease of use. For the gamer’s worried about running out of juice during that all important clan match when communication is absolutely vital, the 420X delivers up to 15hrs of battery power in a single full charge.
Turtle Beach 420X Setup:
When it comes to gaming, Turtle Beach are the ones who know gamer’s best, and the last thing us gamer’s want is an encyclopedia of setup instructions when it comes to our essential chat accessory. Therefore and as always, the whole setup/pairing process (once the headset is fully charged) is completed within 4 steps. Much likes previous headsets we’ve reviewed from Turtle Beach, the user guide does feature the setup instructions is both text and visual diagram format so can easily be set up by those with little to no technical experience.
One thing to watch for, and believe me there are quite a few people that do this, is to watch for the mic boom placement/installation. Many people do assm,e the mic boom is inserted in to the right ear-cup as there is indeed an optical port available, and the mic boom does easily slide in to this hole. However this is incorrect and the mic boom should be inserted in to the left ear-cup port. A little resistance is met, however if you gently push the adapter in to the port it will fit nice and snug – trust me you’ll not break it!!!
The 420X are a true Turtle Beach statement piece of gaming necessity, offering up quality audio where it’s needed. Performance wise the 420X love being thrown in to the on-screen action with the low and medium frequencies being transferred to the ear in an a slightly over-exaggerated way. In any other environment than gaming, this would almost certainly be un-bearable, but from gaming point of view the 420X delivering slightly more boom than what’s needed works in a funny sort of way and enhances what’s displayed on screen. Balancing the audio reproduction are the high tones, that again are slightly over-the-top, but in a way that suits the environment one would be using this headset for. Overall sound stage the 420X delivers works, with the low/medium tones taking center stage.
You know you have the right gaming accessory when you have a name like Turtle Beach stamped on it and the 420X is no exception to this rule. Staying true to a design construction setup that works, Turtle Beach know what gamer’s want and strive with every new product release to provide this in abundance. The 420X are a sharp, all-in-one stylish, performance guaranteed headset, offering everything any hardcore xbox(er) could want in their audio apparatus – providing that is, if you like your beats high and your bass down low….
