Much the same as previous Turtle Beach headsets we’ve looked at, the Stealth 400 features much of the same Turtle Beach style/design flairs – and if you are a Turtle Beach fan, you’ll be able to tell one a mile off. From the Famous Turtle beach logo that sits within each ear cup inner and adorns each ear cup outer, right through to the coloured race stripe that encases each ear cup foam piece. Both ear cups and headband feature just over an inch of mesh wrapped memory foam to aid with comfort.
The Stealth 400 is like previous models, and is made from a toughened plastic shell. This particular design element has been the topic of many a conversation, with many disputing the longevity of this headset and if it will stand the test of time? Delving in to this debate slightly, the Stealth 400 id designed both to sit within a particular price point and satisfy gamer’s concerns when it comes to headsets: namely size and weight. It simply doesn’t make sense from a gaming point of view to have a headset that is bulky and weighty during those marathon gaming sessions. It’s in this marathon gaming scenario that the Stealth 400 lends itself, being both lightweight and compact. However this does have it’s drawbacks. Being a fairly compact unit, the Stealth 400 probably isn’t one the ideal choice for gamer’s with a larger head circumference. While the Stealth features the extra 1.5″ extending room either side, i suspect this is only allowing for average sized heads. Therefore forcing the headphones apart does result in some rather strange crackling noises.
The Stealth 400 are closed back circumaural headphones and so are designed with noise isolation in mind – allowing the gamer to fully immerse themselves in the on-screen action. Technical specifications wise, the Stealth 400 feature 50mm speakers with neodyminium magnets and have an impedance measurement of 32ohms. The frequency response is 20Hz – 20kHz. For those un-familiar with the last two lines of audio talk – a quick rundown:
In crude terms, sensitivity tells how loud a speaker will play on a certain power rating. The higher the sensitivity, the louder it will play given the same power.
Think of the speaker as a pipe. Think of the audio signal (or, if you prefer, the music) as the water flowing through the pipe. The bigger the pipe, the more easily water can flow through it, and the more water can flow through it. A speaker with a lower impedance is like a bigger pipe. It lets more electrical signal through, and lets it flow more easily.
The Frequency Response specification attempts to describe the range of frequencies or musical tones a speaker can reproduce, measured in Hertz (known to old-timers as “Cycles per Second”). The range of human hearing is generally regarded as being from 20Hz, very low bass tones, through 20kHz (20,000Hz), the very highest treble. Presumably a speaker that could reproduce that range would sound lifelike.
Being a wireless headset with a wireless range of up to 30ft, included in the package is a USB transmitter, that also features an optical port. Likewise the ear cups feature a variety of controls and ports. One such port is reserved for the removable mic boom that’s included in the package, making this ideal for use with your mobile device or PS Vita. An exciting feature is the ability to connect your mobile phone whilst gaming at same time to ensure you never miss a call or text.
Before going about the installation/pairing process, it’s important to ensure you have the microphone boom inserted correctly. I’ve read literally hundreds of posts from disgruntled consumers complaining that they’ve bought a faulty headset and are disappointed – only to discover that what they’ve actually done is insert the mic boom in to the optical port and thus after installation get the usual lights on for the mic but with no sound. Initially the mic boom insert hole is a little stiff, but by applying some pressure alongside an assurance that you will not break you new gaming gadget, and you should end up with an easy installation.
In terms of the actual installation, the process is made as easy as possible – and the included user guide completes this whole process (for PS4) in 4 easy steps. Alongside the text guide is a full visual setup diagram, so when you can’t be bothered to read the instructions, do as Turtle Beach intended and just follow the image guide…..
The Stealth 400 are predominantly a gamer’s accessory, whether that be mobile or console gaming, and in this environment they do the job intended without breaking the bank. Sound reproduction when it comes to gaming modes focuses very much on the higher frequencies which in any gaming FPS scenario is essential, allowing for the slightest of enemy detail to be picked out and enhanced. Low tones remained adequate with bomb blasts, gun shots and explosions following the on-screen action and be reproduced and represented in a realistic manor.
