With just over two weeks to Christmas 2015, it’s no surprise that the boys toys are throwing themselves through our doors, all wanting to get their 15 mins of fame on the front page. Today is no different and for all the big kids out there and those wanting a serious commuting piece of kit, Daily Reviews have got our hands on a scooter that looks very very familiar. Just over two months ago, Daily Reviews got our hands on the Xootr MG kick scooter, and today we are taking a look at the Xootr MG with a twist, introducing the Xootr MG neon – the MG but with a bright neon colour adaptation.
The Xootr MG Neon is the same as our Mg kick scooter in bright new colors. The deck of the Mg is solid magnesium (no kidding) providing the lightest deck structure and lowest deck height of any Xootr scooter to date. We believe the Xootr Mg is the most advanced push scooter ever made, which is why it is our best selling model. The deck is available in two vibrant colors: green and orange. It also offers a wide deck which provides comfortable cruising, allowing you to have both feet side by side on the deck unlike other adult kick scooters such as the Razor A5 Lux, Know-Ped, or Micro. The brightly colored deck also helps you to be seen if you commute/travel early in the morning or late in the day.
Please note, the majority of this review text has been taken from our previous MG scooter review as the two scooters are identical in both specification and features. Some portions will have been changed/added to, to reflect the colour variations between the two products, however the vast majority of text within both review publications will be indentical. Our product summary, testing and overall summary will be unique to the MG Neon scooter and the product will be scored accordingly and on it’s own merit/performance.
When purchasing a kick scooter for the purpose of leisure and commuting, a vital feature must be versatility, portability and overall weight. The vast majority of city commuters will at some point during their journey want/need to change transportation modes (such as hopping o a bus/train), and with the limits on public transport concerning wheeled haulage, having your manual mode of transport be as flexible as possible is a must. The Xootr MG Neon is not only is it incredibly lightweight, but it’s also easily folded away for storage. The folding mechanism is controlled with a push button ergo locking pin that sits on the underside of the deck.
With the frame being a solid magnesium structure and the deck being made from a powder coated solid magnesium cast, the Xootr MG Neon is capable of high speeds with minimal effort. The handlebars are TIG-Welded 4130 steel, TIG welding is a more complicated process of welding above others but produces a better quality weld that is suited to the nature of the Xootr whereby hard-wearing/strong components are an absolute must. While sounding like it would weigh a ton, the MG neon is like it’s replica brother the MG black, very lightweight coming in at only 4.5KGs. The maximum rider weight is a whopping 114KGs (250lbs).
The Xootr MG Neon comes pre-fitted/equipped with a single front brake, which should make the novice user feel more secured and safe in the knowledge that if needed one can brake quickly and with ease. Taking a walk down retro lane and the brake lever used is a BMX style lever. Listed as an additional extra (but pre fitted on our review unit) is the rear fender/brake kit. Other customization options/features that you can add to the Xootr MG is a carry strap, carry bag, and even a cross-rack (which is essentially a bicycle bag but adapted to fit the Xootr scooters).
The handlebars are fully adjustable providing a minimum (un-altered) handlebar height of 25 inches from the deck, with a fully extended handlebar height of 38 inches from the deck which can easily accommodate adults up to 6ft 7″ in height. The handlebars themselves are adjusted using a crank lever locking system.
The deck itself sits lower to the ground than other scooters of this variety, not just because they want it to look cool, it serves a purpose in the fact that a lower to the ground deck increases kicking efficiency which in turn produces a faster overall travelling distance/speed. In addition the deck is wider than normal to allow for side by side feet positioning – so for the beginner rider, this is perfect. The deck dimensions are: 7.4 inches wide by 25 inches long. Inlaid on the deck surface are CNC machined dots, these provide great traction and extra grip during kick.
The Xootr MG Neon is sitting on 180 mm diameter, ultra-low-resistance polyurethane tire (black) on die cast aluminum rims. Xootr Wheels are custom made for their push scooter range and are therefore nlt available on any other product. The wheels are made by molding polyurethane on to aluminum centers. The hours and hours of testing and polyurethane blending ensured the right combination of both speed and durability – a wheel that stands the test of times. The Xootr MG wheels offer the lowest rolling resistance of any small wheeled vehicle, and while they have a smaller overall footprint they are large enough to ensure any road/pavement surface imperfections are dealt with efficiently.
The Xootr Neon like it’s twin: the MG black, does and performs exactly as it proclaims to. The lowered deck ensures less energy is taken to drive the scooter allowing the rider to focus on what’s important – taking in the scenery!!! The raised deck nodules add grip when need especially in wetter conditions, with the larger wheel diameter providing decent traction to the ground underneath. However, as we are dealing with grip-less tyres, wetter, icy weather can produce some slight slipping every now and then, so this is something to be aware of. In addition the Xootr MG Neon is better suited to smoother surfaces such as pavement and debris free roads. Grassed areas and surfaces that feature gravel/stones/un-even areas can produce a very bumpy ride – while not un-pleasant, you do have to work harder kicking the scooter along – great if you desire an extra workout, not so good if this workout comes as you are travelling back from a 12 hr work shift. Again, and much like the MG Black we reviewed, this is not a fault of the Xootr MG, all the features are there such as lowered deck, minimal kick effort, and are very much in abundance. However as a typical British citizen, our paths/roads do leave a lot to be desired and so i feel this is the aspect that very much tested the MG neon. The scooter performed well – our environment surface did not!!!!
The MG Neon is a great spin off of the MG, bringing all the features/specifications of the MG but with a snazzy paint job thrown in. Not just for show, the shocking green deck add a visual safety aspect when using your scooter in low lit areas. Add to this portability and a damn good looking scooter and what you end up with is a very 2015/2016 way of getting in and around town. Be the envy of your mates – not the laughing stock, get a Xootr MG!!!
